Minimalist Jumping Robots for Celestial Exploration
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we describe a novel approach to the design and deployment of small and minimally actuated jumping or hopping robots that are suitable for exploring the unstructured terrains of celestial bodies. We introduce the basic jumping mobility paradigm, as well as the evolution of our hopping robot concept by way of the main prototypes that we have developed. These prototypes show that a small number of actuators can control the vehicle’s steering, hopping, and self-righting motions. The last prototype is equipped with wheels so that precision motion can be combined with gross hopping motion. Lessons learned during the development of these prototypes have general applicability to the design of jumping robots. In addition to reviewing the issues relevant to the design of jumping systems, in this paper we describe some of the key mechanisms that enable our approach, we summarize tests obtained with these systems, and we present our future plans of localization and sensing for hopping

A Minimally Actuated Hopping Rover for Exploration of Celestial Bodies
This paper describes a minimalist hopping robot that can perform basic exploration tasks on Mars or other moderate gravity bodies. We show that a single actuator can control the vehicle’s jumping and steering operations, as well as the panning of an on-board camera. Our novel thrusting linkage also leads to good system efficiency. The inherent minimalism of our hopping paradigm offers interesti...
متن کاملPlanetary Exploration Using Hopping Robots
The recent trend towards small and frequent space mission to Mars and other celestial bodies such as moons, asteroids, and comets has sparked new interest towards multi-functional vehicles, capable of providing excellent mobility to dedicated scientific packages. Currently, the only deployed, and actively engineered, mobility paradigm is a 6-wheeled rover, as seen in the Pathfinder mission's So...
متن کاملAdvancing Artificial Intelligence through Minimalist Humanoid Robotics
While the robots that most quickly come to mind to the general public are those with the most elaborate features and movements, those that are most useful in advancing the state of the art in artificial intelligence (AI) are very different. Minimalist robots are inexpensive and therefore more broadly available for research and educational purposes, but also force the researcher to rely on good,...
متن کاملA Procedural Knowledge Approach to Task-Level Control
Effective task-level control is critical for robots that are to engage in purposeful activity in realworld environments. This paper describes PRSLite, a task-level controller grounded in a procedural knowledge approach to action description. The controller embodies much of the philosophy that underlies the Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) but in a minimalist fashion. Several features of PRS-Li...
متن کاملThe Application of Bioinspired Jumping Locomotion Principles to Mobile Robots – Modeling and Analysis
Nature provides various alternative locomotion strategies which could be applied to robotic systems. One such strategy is that of jumping, which enables centimeter to millimeter-scaled insects to traverse highly unstructured environments quickly and efficiently. These insects generate the required high magnitude power through specialized structures which store and rapidly release large amounts ...
